(University of Maryland, USA), [email protected] Scheduled commercial passenger airlines operate based on published itineraries between designated city-pairs. Due the dependence of air transportation system capacity on weather conditions, it is very common for there to be significant disruptions in air-line schedules. This creates a strong need for systems to optimize system performance under degraded conditions. Typically, one must minimize the deviation between the original timetable and the schedule actually used. In this paper we describe the set of resource allocation methods and practices used jointly by airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration within the U.S. to address these types of problems.
